The Best Grass-Fed Whey Protein Powders 2026

This time of year, I find myself wanting on-the-go protein options more often. And one of my favorite options? A nutrient-dense protein powder.

But before adding any ol’ protein powder into your diet, here are 5 of the best, high-quality, grass-fed whey options to consider! 💪

I talk a lot about nutrition in this little corner of the internet.. which means, naturally, I have a lot of content about the importance of prioritizing protein. I also chat a lot about convenient nutrition, easy wellness swaps, and how to make healthy eating more simple for a busy lifestyle.

That's where protein powder enters the chat.

But while protein powder is a great way to get high-quality nutrition into your diet, there are a lot that miss the mark in terms of quality and sustainability. That is why I've spent the last few months sampling some of the best protein powders on the market (grass fed whey protein powder to be specific), and am giving you the inside scoop (😜) on which one you should be reaching for.

Whether your goal is muscle growth, weight loss, athletic performance, muscle recovery, or simply getting more quality protein into your busy days, here are my top picks for the best grass-fed whey protein powders.

The Benefits of Protein

Protein is one of the most important macronutrients for overall wellness, yet it’s also one of the nutrients many people struggle to eat enough of consistently.

Protein plays a role in:

  • Muscle building and maintaining lean muscle

  • Hormone production and blood sugar balance

  • Satiety and weight loss support

  • Energy levels

  • Immune function

  • Tissue repair and muscle recovery

Protein also contains essential amino acids, which are the amino acids your body cannot produce on its own and therefore must come from food sources.

One reason whey protein supplements are so popular is because whey is considered a complete protein source. It contains all nine essential amino acids and is particularly rich in leucine, which plays a major role in muscle synthesis and muscle mass support.

And honestly? For busy moms, shift workers, travelers, and anyone juggling a full schedule, protein shakes are simply a great way to help bridge nutritional gaps.

Why I Love Protein Powders

While I always encourage prioritizing whole foods first, protein powder can absolutely be a helpful tool.

I personally love having a clean protein option on hand for:

  • Quick breakfasts— as much as I love my go-to breakfast, sometimes you just need something quick

  • Post-workout recovery and supporting fitness goals

  • Smoothies or yogurt bowls

  • Busy afternoons

  • Traveling

  • Increasing protein content without much prep

Most people simply are not eating enough protein throughout the day. Adding a scoop of grass-fed protein powder to a smoothie can easily provide 20-25 grams of protein in less than a minute.

That’s convenience I can get behind. However, not all protein powders are created equal.

Many conventional whey protein powders contain artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, fillers, gums, inflammatory oils, and protein sourced from conventional dairy products raised in concentrated animal feeding operations. For years, I thought that protein powders made me feel sick.. turns out, I was just using products that were filled with a lot of unnecessary ingredients that were not supporting my health.

That is why I prioritize protein powders that avoid all the unnecessary junk and instead offer you a high-quality powder that your body can easily use.

What I Look for in a Protein Powder

When I’m evaluating the best grass-fed whey protein powders, there are several things I pay close attention to. Personally, I prioritize quality while still maintaining an 80/20 balance. Since protein powders are something that go inside my body, I try to lean into making sure those are as high-quality as I can find.

Here are a few guide lines I use to finding products that support my wellness goals holstically:

1. Grass-Fed Milk Sources

I prefer whey sourced from grass-fed cows that are pasture-raised whenever possible. Grass-fed dairy products tend to contain higher levels of healthy fats and beneficial fatty acids like conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).

Animal welfare and sourcing practices matter to me, especially when consuming dairy regularly.

2. Minimal Ingredients

I personally avoid protein powders loaded with artificial ingredients, artificial flavors, and unnecessary additives.

The best choice, in my opinion, is a clean protein powder with simple ingredients you actually recognize. While that might sound like trying to find a magical unicorn, there are actually a lot of really great options! Every option on this list has 5 ingredients or less 👏

3. Protein Quality

Different types of whey protein matter.

You’ll commonly see:

  • Whey concentrate

  • Whey isolate

Whey isolate typically has fewer calories and lower fat content because it undergoes additional processing to remove more lactose and fat. Meanwhile, whey concentrate is often slightly less processed and retains more naturally occurring nutrients.

There isn’t necessarily one “perfect” option—it depends on your body and preferences.

4. Taste

Because let’s be honest: if it tastes terrible, nobody is drinking it consistently.

A great taste matters. That said, you'll find a few high-quality protein options on this list that are unflavored. I'll simply mix it with some cacao powder and maple syrup, or add it into a fruit smoothie! I've found that these "unflavored" powders are definitely not flavor-neutral and I much prefer when they are mixed into something else.

My Top 5 Best Grass Fed Whey Protein Powder Options

Not that you know what I look for in a protein powder, what brands actually stand up ot the list and perform well?? Here are my top 5 tried-and-true protein powders for simple, convenient nourishment.

1. Heart & Soil Whey Protein (My Top Pick)

If you’ve been around here for any length of time, you probably already know I’m a big fan of Heart & Soil. And after trying countless whey protein supplements over the years, this one quickly became my top recommendation for the best grass-fed whey protein.

What I love most is that the ingredient list is an emphasis on superior quality. And they don’t just talk about it— they actually provide the third-party testing to prove it’s as pure as you can get.

Their whey comes from grass-fed milk sourced from family farms, and the formula avoids many of the fillers and artificial ingredients commonly found in regular whey protein powders.

Some standout features:

  • Grass-fed whey protein concentrate

  • No artificial sweeteners and no artificial flavors

  • Clean ingredient label— literally, everything is high-quality whole food sources

  • Plastic-free packaging 👏 so rare in supplements! But I love the extra focus on keeping their products pure by avoiding plastic as much as possible. Their whey protein is packaged in a paper-based tub, and the scooper is even plastic-free! This really is one of the features that set them apart from others on the list.

I also appreciate that Heart & Soil prioritizes sourcing transparency and overall ingredient quality. In a supplement market full of marketing hype, that matters.

If your goal is finding a clean protein option that aligns with a more holistic wellness lifestyle, this is absolutely my best choice.

While they do an excellent job with ingredient quality, I also really appreciate their effort in minimizing plastic in their packing. Great work, Heart & Soil!

2. Naked Nutrition Grass Fed Whey

Naked Nutrition makes another excellent grass-fed whey protein powder. Their products are known for minimal ingredients and straightforward formulations. Naked, if you will 🤪

They are also NSF certified and are third-party tested. This protein powder is sourced from small dairy farms and contains very few ingredients overall, which I appreciate.

The Unflavored Whey Protein has just one ingredient— grass-fed whey protein concentrate. They also have a few different flavored options available, but I haven’t tried any of those yet. But even the flavored options have a simple ingredient list without any artificial sweeteners or flavors!

It is packaged in plastic, which is honestly kind of the standard, unfortunately, but otherwise this is a really solid option that is fairly affordable for the quality of product.

3. Natural Force Organic Whey Protein

Natural Force is another brand I’ve enjoyed. Their organic whey protein is sourced from grass-fed cows and minimally processed. They prioritize sourcing from family farms and avoiding unnecessary additives, which i’m always a fan of!

One thing that stands out is their focus on certifications and testing: third-party tested for heavy metals and gluten, USDA certified organic, non GMO, keto, and kosher, and American Humane certified.

That said, those certifications do come at the cost of a slightly higher product compared to some other options. But if that extra verification is important to you, this is a great protein option!

Also, their chocolate peanut butter option has one of the better flavor profiles if you like richer protein shakes 🤤

4. Pro Mix Protein

True story, I had plain yogurt and Pro Mix Protein powder as a snack nearly every day for a whole summer. I was a little hyper-fixated on it for a moment 😅 Since then, I’ve tried quite a few other equally clean chocolate-flavored protein powders, and this one just isn’t my favorite. It is still good for sure, but flavor-wise, I prefer some of the other brands mentioned. That said, I have not personally tried any of their other flavors, so if you have, I’d love to hear what you think!

As with the other options, they are grass-fed, but what stands out is that their protein is minimally filtered, allowing it to retain omega-3s and CLA. 👏 They also have their third-party testing results right on the product page of their website. Truly, this alone makes me want to buy from them. That type of transparency to their consumers should be the gold standard. Well done, Pro Mix!

One of my fave quick-and-easy snacks is plain yogurt, a scoop of protein powder mixed in, and fresh berries on top. 10/10 🫐🍓

5. Truvani

Back when I was first getting intentional about my ingredient labels and nutrition, Truvani was one of the first protein powders I tried. And through the years, they have always been a solid option. One of my favorite things about Truvani is their flavors— they have such good flavored protein without using any artificial flavorings or ingredients.

For their whey protein options, they have vanilla, strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate. All of those flavors have five ingredients or less 👏 They also have a chocolate peanut butter protein, and that has 7 ingredients, which is still pretty dang impressive!

If you like plant-based protein powders, they would be my top recommendation for those. The Vanilla Chai Protein is one of my all-time favorite protein powders ever 🤤

Whey Protein vs Plant Protein

I get asked this question constantly.

Plant protein can absolutely have a place, especially for those avoiding dairy products. Personally, I leaned on some of these plant-based protein powders when I completed Whole30 a few years back. However, whey protein generally has a more complete amino acid profile and tends to be more effective for muscle protein synthesis.

Many plant protein powders also require blending multiple protein sources together to achieve a similar amino acid balance.

That said, everyone’s body is different.

If you are someone looking for high-quality plant-based protein powders, I have a whole blog post here that can help you to find some great options.

Are Grass-Fed Protein Powders Actually Better?

In my opinion: yes.

Grass-fed dairy products often contain higher levels of beneficial fatty acids like linoleic acid and omega-3 fatty acids compared to conventional dairy.

Additionally, sourcing from pasture-raised grass-fed cows often aligns with better animal welfare standards and more sustainable farming practices.

While not every grass-fed protein powder is automatically perfect, I do think there is a meaningful quality difference between high-quality grass-fed proteins and many conventional options.

Common Ingredients I Personally Avoid

If you have ever looked into supplements, you know how overwhelming it can be. There are literally thousands of options, labels, and brands.. it can be really hard knowing what to look for and what to avoid. While I've already shared about some of the things that I do look for, here is a list of the things I generally try to avoid. With all things, I am very much from the "80/20" mentality, so don't take any of this as dogmatic or fear-based. I'm always an advocate for making an informed decision based on your own personal goals!

When choosing the best protein powders, I personally try to avoid:

  • Artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, and artificial ingredients… basically, if you don’t find it in whole foods, I don’t want it (again, I try to keep this balanced, but for our everyday foods we avoid them as much as possible)

  • Excess gums and fillers

  • Cheap protein blends

  • Unnecessary oils

  • Highly processed additives

I also pay attention to ingredient transparency and testing for heavy metals. Because of a lack of regulations in the supplement industry, it is important you do your due diligence when shopping for them. All of the recommended brands on this post have third-party testing and results available to consumers, which really is the gold standard 👏

How Much Protein Do You Actually Need?

Protein needs vary significantly depending on your body size, activity level, muscle building goals, and overall health.

A registered dietitian or healthcare provider can help personalize recommendations, especially if you have a medical condition.

But in general, many active adults benefit from intentionally increasing protein intake to support lean muscle, muscle recovery, and satiety.

And protein powder can be an added bonus when whole food intake falls short.

Final Thoughts on the Best Grass-Fed Whey Protein Powders

At the end of the day, the best grass-fed whey protein powder is the one that:

  • Uses high quality ingredients

  • Prioritizes clean sourcing

  • Fits your lifestyle

  • Tastes good

  • Helps you consistently hit your protein goals

After trying many options myself, Heart & Soil remains my personal favorite because it balances ingredient quality, sourcing transparency, clean formulation, and genuinely good flavor. If you’re looking for a grass fed whey protein powder that supports your wellness goals without all the junk, it’s definitely the one I’d recommend reaching for.

But that said, any of the options on this list really stand out in the industry for their quality, sourcing, and prioritizing a clean protein option!

Are there other great protein powders that I should include on this list? Let me know! I always love finding new products to recommend to health coaching clients who are looking for healthier nutrition options.

As always, nothing on this blog is medical advice. Please do your own research and speak with your personal health provider before starting a new product or supplement.
