Talking about tallow is not new on this blog. Believe it or not, one of my first blog posts ever was about rendering your own suet and making tallow body butter. Since then, I’ve opted for convenience over kitchen projects, but still love beef tallow as a skincare ingredient.

Recently, I had the opportunity to try aloetallow, a face and body lotion with only 8 clean and holistically supportive ingredients 👏

After using it for the past couple of months, I’m sharing a full review and everything you need to know about this nourishing lotion!

Would I recommend? Yes!

aloetallow is full of nourishing ingredients like grass-fed beef tallow, shea butter, and coconut oil, is easy to apply, has zero synthetic fragrances, is eczema-friendly, and is a safe moisturizer for my whole family!

It’s ingredients rival high-quality skin care products, while being significantly more affordable than some other popular grass-fed tallow lotions and body creams.

Have you ever used a tallow lotion or cream but struggled with how heavy it is? Or had some difficulty applying it? aloetallow is a tallow-based lotion that solves both of those struggles.

Caroline—one of the co-founders of aloetallow— was struggling with skin irritation from conventional products. Her and her brother (Kyle, the other co-founder) started creating formulas that had the nourishment of tallow, but were also light and easy to apply. They landed on aloetallow, a nourishing moisturizer with only 8 ingredients.

I really love it when products have simple ingredients that actually work. So when I heard aloetallow only has 8 ingredients on their list, I was immediately curious what they included!

Here is the full ingredient list for aloetallow lotion:

Grass-fed beef tallow: sourced from 100% grass-fed US cattle. Tallow is naturally rich in fat-soluble vitamins A,D,E, and K that help to support your skin’s hydration and integrity.

Cold-pressed aloe vera: aloe can help to calm skin irritation, plus offer that cooling feel that makes it great for after sun exposure!

Unrefined Coconut Oil: another ingredient that’s rich in fatty acids and supportive of our skin barrier!

Food-Grade Shea Butter: Another moisture powerhouse!

Carrot Seed Hydrate: This carrot extract is rich in beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A. Vitamin A helps to encourage cell turnover and fight oxidative damage in the skin!

Glycerin: A humectant that draws moisture from the air directly into your skin, keeping it hydrated hours after application.

Plant-Derived Emulsifying Wax: This is what binds the tallow and other ingredients into a stable lotion without separation.

Phenoxyethanol: Preservative to help keep the product safe and shelf-stable. Some people get a little cautious with preservatives, but this one in particular is well-researched, well-tolerated, and considered to be very low risk. Additionally, the concentration is less than 1% of the total product, a benchmark limit set by the EU, which has the strictest cosmetic safety standards in the world.

Anytime I review a product, I want to be comprehensive so that you are well-informed and know what you’re purchasing! Here are some of my favorite things about aloetallow, plus my not-so-fave parts!

• Pump dispenser makes it really easy to get the product— no scooping out of jars or having to close lids after putting lotion on your hands 👏

• No greasy or oily feel after applying

• Eczema-friendly for my young kids

• Clean ingredient list

• Left my skin feeling soft and moisturized for hours

• USA-made

• On the pricier side— price per ounce cannot be compared to conventional drugstore lotions— they just are not even in the same category. Because of the ingredient quality and sourcing, it’s more in line with other high-quality lotions and creams on the market.

  When you compare it to other high-quality tallow lotions like Primally Pure or Toups and Co (two other brands I’ve used and loved) it actually is significantly more affordable.

One Quick Note—

While trying this lotion, my whole family tried it. I used it on my keratosis pilaris, my kid’s eczema, and my husband’s sensitive skin, and overall, we all loved it!

The only area I did not try the lotion was on my face. Historically, I am very acne-prone, and while the website says aloetallow can be used as a face lotion, I know how my face responds to tallow from over the years.

If you want to try aloetallow on your face, I would recommend starting small and patch testing first! There are many people who tolerate tallow well as a face moisturizer, unfortunately I’m just not one of them.

Who is aloetallow for?

If you are looking for a tallow product that is more of a lotion consistency, instead of a thick body cream, this is great!

This product is also great for someone looking for a clean ingredient label, without a bunch of unnecessary or potentially harmful ingredients.

Lastly, I would recommend this for someone who likes versatile products that can be used for the whole fam. Both my husband and I, and our kiddos, all have pretty sensitive skin. aloetallow never irritated any of us, which is a huge win!

Who is aloetallow not for?

If you are looking for a really thick tallow cream, this lotion wouldn’t be the right fit.

Also, if you are wanting something scented, this ain’t the one! aloetallow uses no artificial fragrances and instead has a light, clean scent.

I love that aloetallow is manufactured in the USA, and avoids potentially harmful ingredients like parabens, phthalates, and artificial fragrances.

Is aloetallow non-toxic?

The ingredient list includes nourishing ingredients for your skin plus a plant-based emulsifier and a preservative well within the strictest safety limits. For someone like me, who prioritizes a balanced approach to healthy living, this is a great non-toxic option!

Is aloetallow safe for kids?

I have used this on both of my kiddos! Not only did they both like it, but it didn’t irritate their eczema spots like some other lotions.

Does aloetallow include synthetic fragrances?

Nope! It has a naturally occurring scent that is very light and clean.

How can I use aloetallow?

Anyway you use your favorite lotion or moisturizer! I have been using it as an everyday moisturizer after the shower, on my arms to keep keratosis pilaris at bay, supporting my kiddos’ eczema flare-ups, and whenever my hands feel a little extra dry!

Yes! The tallow they use is from 100% grassfed cattle raised domestically in the USA.
