The Best Natural & Organic Face Masks for Acne
I have talked a lot about my previous struggle with cystic acne due to PCOS. And while I no longer struggle with cystic breakouts, I do still have the occasional breakout. Over the last few months, I have been night weaning my son which led to getting my first postpartum period back. Through that hormonal transition, a few breakouts were triggered.
I am so thankful that I can now use this as a sign of my internal health and wellness and give my body some additional support. As with all things, I try to use a holistic approach—prioritizing nutrient-dense foods, stress support, and topical, high-quality skincare. One of my favorite rescue products for when I struggle with acne is a face mask that targets the specific needs of acne-prone skin.

Primally Pure Skincare Products
I remember being younger and being absolutely awful to my skin-- I used harsh scrubs, drying clay masks, and always wondered why I didn't have smoother skin. Not to mention, ignoring the impact my diet, lifestyle and stress levels were having on my skin health. (If the idea of tackling skin health through a holistic approach is new to you, make sure you read this blog post until the end!)
Thankfully, those days are past me and I now prioritize products targeted for a specific skin concern. I have been using and recommending Primally Pure for years now-- and I continue to love and appreciate their values as a company. They stand behind natural ingredients-- and not just natural, but organic ingredients. Ones that are safe for sensitive skin, calm irritated skin, and support holistic health. These products have helped me to keep cystic acne at bay, improve my skin texture, and minimize old acne scars.
One of my favorite things about the Primally Pure company is their dedication to trusted, professional sources. Combined, they have years of experience in holistic health and wellness helping to formulate their products and create effective treatment options! Not to mention, Primally Pure products smell like you are in a spa.
I have personally used this brand for years and love recommending it to other people hoping to clean up their products. You can always use code KAELYN10 to save 10% on any of your orders ✨ One of my favorite features is their personalized skincare quiz— this takes the guesswork out of it and allows you to get a customized skincare routine to fit all your needs.
Best Face Masks for Acne Treatment
When I started dealing with dry skin and a new, different type of acne (cystic acne), I tried any and all kinds of acne products.
Sometimes when I look into skincare products, I get so overwhelmed trying to choose. That is why I love that any and every product from them will be nourishing and supportive to holistic health. One of my favorite lines of theirs is their natural face masks (no more messy diy face mask mixing)! Here are some of my favorite acne-fighting face masks to help support your skin:
Clarifying Mask
Key Roles:
Targets + treats active breakouts
Reduces redness and inflammation
Speeds up the skin’s healing process
Lightly exfoliates skin and improves texture and tone
Fades discoloration from melasma, sun damage and acne scarring
Significantly reduce hormonal breakouts and cystic acne

White Willow Bark Powder
This highly anti-inflammatory plant contains naturally occurring salicin (the compound salicylic acid is derived from) to gently + effectively keep pores clear of buildup, control excess oil production, stimulate skin cell turnover and reveal a more even skin tone.
Turmeric
Curcumin, the main chemical compound in turmeric, helps to repair UV damage and hyperpigmentation and is packed with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to significantly reduce redness, decrease breakouts and brighten uneven skin tone.
Colloidal Silver
This compound is an ancient remedy for promoting skin healing and restoring healthy skin tissues. Rich concentrations of anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties powerfully and effectively soothe inflammatory skin conditions.
Soothing Mask

Noticeably decreases redness

Relieve sensitivities such as eczema, psoriasis and acne
Key Ingredients:
Raw Honey
Known as a natural humectant, honey helps to infuse hydration into the skin and expedite the healing process. It’s rich in antibacterial and antimicrobial benefits to calm inflammatory skin conditions and contains naturally-occuring enzymes to gently exfoliate + refine skin texture.
Sandalwood Essential Oil
An ancient and sacred plant packed with active anti-inflammatory compounds to decrease redness and irritation, antioxidants to repair free radical damage and maximize the efficacy of paired essential oils to help relieve eczema, psoriasis and acne.
Spirulina
This blue-green algae is a rich source of restorative phytonutrients such as chlorophyll, fatty acids, antioxidants (4x more than berries) and over 18 amino acids to maintain skin’s moisture barrier, minimize redness, detoxify and rebuild skin health.
Chorella
This skin superfood, freshwater algae is potent in vitamins A, vitamin C, D, E and B, antioxidants, amino acids, minerals and chlorophyll. It significantly decreases inflammation, detoxifies skin, promotes a more youthful appearance and supports healthy cell function.
If you are anything like me and think they all sound great (hii, it's me), they also have the option of getting their Mask Trio. This trio has smaller jars of organic face masks, but it allows you to try them all before investing in a larger size. This is a great way to find the best organic face mask for your skin concerns and preferences.
These facial masks can be used for 15-20 minutes after your normal skincare routine. I also use them as an overnight mask spot treatment in targeted areas of my face that are struggling with inflammation or acne. I have found that I get the best results when I use a combination of both methods! The greatest part is that all these masks are made with the best ingredients-- making them safe, not just for frequent use, but even daily use if needed!
As with any new skin care product, make sure you patch test it to make sure you don't have any irritation or reaction.
Acne-Friendly Skincare Routine
Like I mentioned, I have always had fairly acne-prone skin. I tend to be really sensitive to specific active ingredients and also have to be mindful of my hormone levels. While I no longer have many symptoms of PCOS, I am really intentional and mindful about caring for my body and keeping it that way.
So over the last few years, I have intentionally set up an acne-friendly skincare routine. To be fair-- I do not do this every single night. But this is my skincare equivalent to the "everything shower"...
Oil Cleanser to remove dirt and makeup
Everything toner- okay, let me warn you with this one. While I love every other scent of Primally Pure products, this one is not my favorite. But I still use it because I notice the benefits in my skin tone and complexion. But it does smell a bit strong of apple cider vinegar
Plumping mist (this is a new product for me, and I think it ranks right up there in my top 5-- it's full of aloe vera, rose hydrosol, and peppermint essential oil for a hydrating and refreshing mist and it is absolutely perfect for my dry skin in the cold weather! It also helps to stimulate hyaluronic acid production and skin turnover which helps to say buh-bye to dead skin cells)
Antioxidant balm
**if i am planning on doing a face mask that night, I will apply it right after I use the oil cleanser. Then, once I wash it off, I follow it up with a mist and moisturizer.
If I am in a pinch, I'll remove my makeup, oil cleanse, and then use the mist and balm! It takes less than 3 minutes tops 👏
Holistic Approach to Healing Acne
One of my favorite things about Primally Pure is that they advocate for a truly holistic approach to healing acne. That means not only using high-quality skincare products but really getting to the root cause of why you are having acne to begin with. Because the reality is that skin symptoms are a sign of what is going on internally.
This blog post on their site is an amazing story that gives a great example of a holistic approach. I love that a skincare brand highlights that it is not just skincare products. It is so much more than that. A Holistic skincare approach to healing acne includes:
Nourishing diet- this includes eating primarily whole foods, limiting ultra-processed foods, and ensuring that you are optimizing nutrient intake
gut health
stress management - your lifestyle and stress response directly affect your stress hormones.
Sleep Quality
Movement
Blood Sugar Regulation - dysregulated blood sugar levels can lead to inflammation, which is one of the precursors to acne. This post shares some holistic tips for balancing blood sugar
Minimizing environmental toxins and chemicals - I am not about all the fear-based messaging that “chemicals are bad”. I truly believe in a balanced and educated approach to wellness. But when it comes to chemicals and artificial ingredients, they can hinder our body’s natural detoxification methods. When our liver and kidneys (to name a couple) are overburdened with filtering out environmental toxins, unwanted chemicals can accumulate in our bodies. This is why prioritizing a healthy environment and supporting your body’s natural detoxification methods is so important.
As always, nothing on this blog post is medical advice. Always speak with your own healthcare provider to find what is best for you!
