Recette: A Non-Toxic (and aesthetic) Dinnerware for Kids
Looking for non-toxic dishes for your little ones, that are also beautiful?
I had the opportunity to try out Recette dinnerware and am dishing out (😜) a review of my experience!
A few months ago, I cleaned out my cupboard of mismatched kids’ dishes and baby plates. In all my research, I landed on a stainless steel brand for lack of toxins and longevity. While I really have enjoyed my experience with them, there were a few things I didn’t love.
Mainly, that they can’t be thrown in the microwave.
So when Recette reached out offering me a couple of their plates to try out, I was stoked! This post is a review of Recette dishes— what I love, what I didn’t, and whether or not they get my stamp of approval.
TLDR: They DO get the stamp of approval! Recette is a mom-started and owned brand that offers beautiful, non-toxic plates, providing convenience and ease (because who doesn’t need more of that?!).
What is Recette?
Recette began when founder Rachel Wexler, a mom overwhelmed by confusing and conflicting product choices, decided there had to be a better option for families. She hired a chemical engineer, dove into the latest materials research, and designed dinnerware she actually wanted to use at her own table — stylish, safe, and functional.
At its core, Recette dinnerware is a thoughtfully designed tableware collection made with children and parents in mind:
Plates and bowls are crafted from plant-based PLA (polylactic acid) — a renewable, compostable material made from corn starch or sugarcane that avoids the harmful chemicals found in many plastics and melamine alternatives.
Utensils are made from high-quality stainless steel, which is in line with recommendations from pediatric experts
Placemats and accessories round out the collection with easy-to-clean, everyday functionality (seriously, the fact that these plates and bowls can go in both the dishwasher and the microwave wins big points for convenience)
According to Recette’s FAQs, their materials are free from BPA, phthalates, heavy metals (like lead) and contain no added PFAS, so you can feel confident about what your family is eating off of. Recette even highlights practical benefits like being top-rack dishwasher safe and microwave safe, which makes everyday life just a bit easier.
What really sets Recette apart, beyond the materials, is its mission: to clear away the clutter of confusing product claims and help families elevate their table without compromising health or aesthetics. In a world where there is so much information, it is so comforting to have a company that aims to minimize this noise. It’s not just dinnerware; it’s a lifestyle choice for mindful, well-being-oriented homes.
My Experience
For the last few months, these plates have been used pretty much daily. Here is my honest review of this non-toxic dinnerware option…
Let’s start with the pros:
Right away, I noticed that they really are beautiful. They look like a “grown-up” plate, but are simultaneously kid-friendly. But I think my favorite part was truly how conveniently they fit into our routine.
While I am a big fan of stainless steel kid dishes, I can’t throw them into the microwave to reheat leftovers. I then find myself grabbing a dish to reheat the food, then transferring it to my kid's plates. While ultimately it’s not that big of a deal, the fact that Recette plates are microwave-friendly takes one extra step off my plate. And for busy moms, those extra steps here and there really add up.
I also love that these don’t scream “kid plates” and we will be able to use them for years.
In summary, here are my favorite features of Recette non-toxic dinnerware:
Sustainably made and eco-friendly
BPA-Free, Melamine-Free, and Plant-based
Microwave and dishwasher safe 👏
An aesthetic option compared to other “kids plates”
Made to last and can be used in your family for years
And the cons
Right from the start, these plates are quite expensive. For a bundle, which includes 4 plates, 4 bowls, 4 plates and 4 spoons, you are looking at $165.
That said, this bundle could meet all your kids’ eating needs for quite some time. On that note, I’m not sure these dishes would be great for really little ones. At the time of trying these plates, my kids were 4.5 and 2. Neither one of them needs the silicone suction to keep from throwing dishes, and they both have pretty good motor skills and can use forks and spoons.
If your little one struggles with scooping up food or having their plates slide around the table, you may have to wait to use this set until they are a little older.
But once they are through that season, your little ones will never really outgrow these plates. Even as an adult, I have grabbed one of the plates to eat off of.
Overall Recette Review
I think this product is a great option for families because of the convenience it adds, while also being toxin-free. I love the sustainability and eco-friendly results of using plant-based materials. And not to mention, getting to support mother’s in business— something I will always be passionate about!
Overall, if this is a product that fits within your family’s budget, it will be a long-lasting option to support your whole family during meal time!
