Is Low Acid Coffee *ACTUALLY* Healthier? A Fabula Coffee Review

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Upset stomach, diarrhea, worn enamel? (you thought I was singing the pepto bismol theme song, didn't you? 😉)

Really those are just some of the complaints that low-acid coffee companies claim to help with! So does it actually help? How's the taste? And what was my personal experience trying low acid, organic, and mold-free coffee from Fabula?

Not long ago, Fabula reached out to me as a new potential affiliate partner. I shared with them that I only recommend brands that i really really love, and have not yet tried their coffee. So they graciously sent me two of their roasts to sample and I agreed to share my honest experience with their product!

And I'm here to spill all the tea (err, coffee)

What is Fabula Coffee?

Fabula is a coffee company that is committed to high-quality coffee. That means all their coffee is sourced from a single origin, certified organic, mold free, and intentionally roasted to have lower acidity than you average coffee beans. They also have every batch of coffee tested for over 350 chemicals to ensure they are shipping out the best of the best.

While doing more research on the company, there were a few other features that really stood out!

  • Money-Back Guarantee- They stand behind their coffee so much that they offer a money back guarantee on your first order- no questions asked.

  • Customer Rewards - With every purchase you get points that can be put towards a discount on your next order. This helps to make it more affordable overall.

  • K cup option- While I don't personally have a keurig, i know many people that do and love them! And I have heard that sometimes it is hard to find quality coffee that is in a sustainably- made k cup.. Fabula solves this by providing that option on their website!

  • wide variety of roasts- everything from light roasts to dark roast coffee

  • Brewing guide- wanting to level up your coffee brewing game? Their brewing guide is just what you need to check out! Whether you are wanting to make a french press, espresso, drip coffee machine, or any other brewing method, the guide walks you through the right temperature and brew time for your type of coffee. It is another way that they ensure the perfect cup every time!

Benefits of Low- Acid Coffee

According to the Fabula site, low-acid coffee helps to decrease digestive issues like indigestion and heartburn. Going through their online reviews, i also saw many raving reviews from people getting relief from their irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. For people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) a severe type of acid reflux, or stomach ulcers, this may be hugely beneficial! When you have any of these conditions, you are recommended to decrease acidic foods and acidic drinks- citrus fruits, tomatoes, soft drinks, orange juice, coffee, and alcohol are some of the main culprits. For coffee lovers, lower acid coffee may help reduce their symptoms over a cup of regular coffee!

While doing more research on the acidity of coffee, it's effects on the body, and how it's made- i was pretty shocked at all I learned.

How to Make Low-Acidity Coffee

One of the most surprising things for my to learn was how many factors go into creating a lower-acidity product. Here are some of the factors at play that effect coffee acidity levels:

  • Where the Beans are grown- similarly to wine, coffee bean flavor and characteristics like the acidity of your coffee are highly-influenced by the region they grow in.

  • Roast type and amount

  • Brewing Process- Of all ways to brew coffee, making a cold brew extracts less acid from the beans. Cold brew coffee is not the same as iced coffee. Cold brew coffee is made when the grounds are steeped in cold water for 12-24 hours, rather than iced coffee which is made with the grounds steeped in hot water. It is the temperature that effects the release of the acid, resulting in different acid levels in your cup.

While there are many other low-acid coffee brands, what really stood out about Fabula was their commitment to holisitic high-quality- literally from the soil, to harvesting, to your morning brew- every step then ensure a high quality, sustainable experience.

Should my coffee really be organic?

I am not a stickler on everything in my life being organic. Rather, I mainly follow the clean 15 and dirty dozen lists to make healthy eating more affordable. Coffee isn't one of the crops included on either list but it is well researched that coffee is one of the crops with greatest pesticide use.

Another factor to consider when choosing organic is the environmental sustainability.

The following is taken directly from the Fabula site:

We only provide the purest, highest grade specialty coffee beans. Yes, indeed it is Certified USDA Organic, Non-GMO, and fairly traded, just as mother nature intended. But we do not stop there: We test our coffee at independent laboratories for more than 350 chemical compounds and mycotoxins, to ensure you get the cleanest, purest coffee.

We are obviously more than happy to share our reports, just contact us at here. In fact, we don’t quite understand why any coffee company does not offer that?"

I loooove that they provide the results to their testing to consumers. It is the intentional transparency, and dedication to their cause that I wish more companies stood behind!

Our personal experience with Fabula Coffee

My husband and I are big coffee drinkers. We love strong coffee flavors, and always try to opt for organic. One of my favorite parts of the day is having my morning cup of coffee while I read, journal, and watch my daughter play.

We personally don't struggle with a lot of indigestion or reflux with coffee, so I can not speak to the claims on low-acid personally. (although my husband does have weak tooth enamel-- so we may have to ask his dentist how things look at his next cleaning 😅)

But in terms of flavor and quality- we thought Fabula was great! We received two of their most popular roasts- the whole bean medium roast and whole bean light roast. The day we got them just happened to be a day where we had family over, so we brewed a pot for everyone to enjoy. They all commented on how smooth the coffee tasted and how amazing the coffee beans smelled when we opened the package. Even just drinking black coffee had no bitter taste whatsoever- just smooth coffee goodness.

As for having confidence in the coffee being organic, mold-free, and third party tested-- IM A FAN. For those that don't know, im currently breastfeeding and a bit more diligent about what I am consuming and is transferred through my breastmilk. Having that extra assurance that there are no additional chemicals or mycotoxins causing stress on my body, during a time that is already extremely physiologically stressful, makes me so happy!

While we really enjoyed the two versions we tried, we are excited to try a couple of their other varieties, including a darker roast, in the future! We have our eyes on the espresso beans from Colombia and the dark roast from Peru.

I try to be transparent about all the brands i recommend and only after i'm sure theyre something that you would love too! By using the code KAELYN at checkout you can get 10% off your first order- this also offers a small affiliate commission to me, at no additional cost to you. Affiliate commissions are a way I make income for the free content I provide through this blog. It is also a way I try to help consumers buy healthier products at a discount 👏
