30+ Journaling Prompts for Self-Care When You Don't Know How to Journal

Over the years, journaling has become one of my favorite practices for self-care.

This post shares 30 unique journal prompts for inspiring self-care— and can help you to create your own journaling practice.

Journaling has become a pillar in my daily life and personal growth. I cannot think of a single area of my life that has not benefitted from sitting down and putting my pen to a blank page-- and this is not always a beautiful, eloquent process. Sometimes it looks more like scribbles and arrows than cohesive thoughts... but I think that is part of the point.

I have learned over the years that my journaling practice does not have to "look aesthetic" for it to be meaningful. It can be a great tool to slow down the noise of your brain, make sense of your thought process, and give new insights to your own personal needs.

Sounds too good to be true? This post will chat about my personal journey with journaling, some of the studies and research behind the effectiveness of journaling, and how you can get started on your own journaling habit.

My own journey with journaling...

For as long as I can remember, I have always needed a while to process things. I think it is being a very emotional person-- sometimes there is just a lot going on in my inner world for me to sort out. Journaling has been one of the best ways for me to find a deeper understanding about my thoughts and feelings, and create inspiration for moving forward.

My first experience with journaling was actually a school assignment when I was younger. My teacher gave us a designated time every day to write about whether we were having a good day or a bad day and why-- it was such a simple way for me to learn a skill of assessing my own emotions and feelings. Since then, my journaling journey has shifted many times and through different seasons.

It has been such a powerful tool in my life that I have committed to making it a daily habit. Every morning I pull out my journal and write about some of the things I am processing-- and on the days I am not feeling inspired, I rely on some journal prompts to get the creative juices flowing! But either way, I try to write even a little bit-- and always feel it is beneficial.

Why Journaling is the Ultimate Self-Care Tool

Journaling is more than just writing—it’s a therapeutic outlet and a means of connecting with your inner self. Here’s why you should make it a part of your self-care routine:

  • Stress Reduction

Putting pen to paper helps release pent-up emotions and can lower cortisol levels, easing stress and tension.

  • Emotional Clarity

Journaling gives you the space to process your feelings, making it easier to understand and work through them.

  • Improved Mental Health

Studies have shown that expressive writing can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression by promoting a deeper sense of self-awareness.

  • Better Problem-Solving

Writing can help untangle your thoughts, offering fresh perspectives on challenges. I rarely step away from a journaling session without a new idea or approach to how to handle a situation

  • Enhanced Creativity

Journaling frees your mind to explore new ideas, whether you’re brainstorming solutions or simply reflecting on life. Whenever I am struggling with a lack of creativity, I try to journal more. I find that it is directly correlated with new ideas, inspiration, and creativity.

  • Tracking Growth

Your journal is a time capsule of your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Looking back can show how far you’ve come, and inspire you to continue progressing towards new growth and goals.

  • Affordable Wellness Practice

One of my frustrations with the online wellness space is this feeling that you always need to buy something to be healthy-- that is not true whatsoever! There are many affordable practices you can implement to help support wellness.

How to Make Journaling a Consistent Habit

I think the most important thing when it comes to journaling, is to find an effective way to practice consistently. That's because the first couple of times may feel a little awkward or weird, especially if you have never journaled in the past. Here are some of my favorite ways to start journal writing on a regular basis.

  • Get a new journal- I always think there is something so inspiring about a brand new journal. (while you're at it, pick up a few new ballpoint or gel pens that you enjoy writing with)

  • Set a Time: Choose a time each day or week to sit with your journal, whether it’s in the morning, during lunch, or before bed. I recommend attaching it to one of your pre-existing daily habits (AKA habit stacking)-- This may look like journaling while your coffee is brewing, journaling during your lunch break, or journaling right before bed instead of scrolling through social media. Having a set time every day will help for journaling to become routine.

  • Create a Space: Designate a cozy, distraction-free spot to write. I have a spot at the bar in my kitchen where, every morning, I sit down and journal for a few minutes. It is usually the first thing I do after eating breakfast and before getting ready for the day.

  • Use Prompts: When you’re unsure where to start, self-care journal prompts (like those above!) can help spark your creativity. Prompts are a great way to have a starting point for what to journal.

  • Be Kind to Yourself: There’s no right or wrong way to journal—let it flow naturally. Some days, I don't feel like I have a lot to journal about and process. Other days, I can't find enough time or pages to work through all that is one my mind. And other days, I find that journaling becomes more of a creative process than emotional expression-- and both are good and beneficial.

Journaling is one of the most accessible and transformative self-care practices you can adopt. It can help support a mental health condition, help find and create a sense of purpose, gain clarity on your core values, and can be a tool that helps you show up as your best self. Try a few of these prompts, and watch how your perspective and well-being shift over time.
