How to Easily Use a Tens Unit for Period Pain Relief
Unfortunately, menstrual pain is the reality for many women-- and ever since my cycle returned postpartum, ya girl has been struggling a bit. I am all about holistic approaches to common health concerns, so naturally, I used the same approach for period pain.
Period pain relief is a priority for many individuals dealing with painful periods, primary dysmenorrhea, polycystic ovarian syndrome (pcos) or conditions like endometriosis pain. A TENS device (short for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) is a battery-operated device that can offer drug-free pain relief by reducing pain levels during the menstrual cycle. This blog post is all about how to use a TENS unit to manage menstrual pain, decrease pain, and have a more comfortable cycle.
What is a TENS Unit?
First things first-- what even IS a TENS unit??
A TENS device uses small electrical impulses to stimulate sensory nerves, helping to block the transmission of pain signals to the spinal cord and brain. Now, before you get worried about the term "electrical impulses", the lower settings really are very mild!
This method of pain relief is based on the gate control theory of pain, which suggests that non-painful input (like electrical pulses) can close the nerve "gates" to painful input. It also promotes the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. Fun fact: these small electrical currents are what makes a tens unit a good option for some women for pain control during labor!
These units are commonly used by physical therapists, trainers, or chiropractors to help with chronic (long-lasting) and acute (short-term) pain. But you can also get great at-home options for managing pain in the comfort of your living room 😍
How Does a TENS Unit Work?
The TENS technology involves placing self-adhesive electrodes (or sticky pads) on the affected area to deliver electric currents. These electrode pads send electrical stimulation to the nerve fibres beneath the skin. The sensation is often described as a tingling sensation, which can reduce the discomfort caused by period cramps and chronic pain.
Benefits of TENS Therapy for Period Pain
Drug-free method: A TENS unit offers an alternative to the use of analgesics (aka pain killers) I am all about a balanced approached to wellness-- so occasionally, I will reach for ibuprofen to help with pain. But I prefer not using it when it can be avoided- just a personal preference 🤷🏻♀️
Targets specific areas of pain: The lower back, lower abdomen, and pubic region can be directly treated.
Positive effects: Regular use can lead to a cumulative effect on pain perception.
Convenient and portable device: This small device with a rechargeable battery is easy to use during your daily activities.
Research, including a Cochrane review and systematic reviews, has shown that tens pain relief can make a significant difference for those suffering from common forms of menstrual cramps and polycystic ovary syndrome. Clinical trials also highlight its analgesic effects and its role in reducing the need for the use of analgesics.
Step-by-Step Guide to Using a TENS Unit for Menstrual Pain Relief
Prepare the TENS Unit
Ensure your tens machine is fully charged or has a working battery.
Attach the gel pads to the electrode pads for better adhesion and proper pad placement.
Position the Electrodes
For effective use, place the adhesive pads on the side of the painful area. Common placements include:
Lower back
Lower abdomen
Pubic region
Consult your healthcare professional for guidance on proper assessment of your electrode placement. Personally, my most common area of pain is my lower abdomen and back-- i'll alternate between putting the tens unit on my abdomen and then back for several cycles when my cramps are at their worst.
Adjust the Settings
Start with a low setting and gradually increase the intensity level until you feel a comfortable tingling sensation. Avoid settings that cause muscle contraction or discomfort.
Experiment with different settings such as frequency, pulse width, and duration for better results.
Duration of Use
Use the TENS unit for a short period (15-30 minutes) or as needed during time periods of severe pain.
Monitor for Side Effects
Check for skin irritation or allergic reactions from the adhesive pads.
Avoid use if you have heart problems, a heart condition, or other serious medical conditions without seeking medical advice.
Holistic Tips for Period Pain Relief
Like I mentioned before, I am all about holistic approaches to wellness. This means we are addressing an issue from all sides. The first thing to note is that super painful periods, while they are common, doesn't mean they are normal. So I strongly recommend working with your health care provider to get to the root cause of what is causing your period pain.
But here are some additional things that can help you to minimize your discomfort.
herbal tinctures- There are several tinctures I keep in my medical cabinet to use as needed for menstrual pain and symptoms. Again, some of these symptoms may be common, but they are not necessarily normal. These are some of my favorite tinctures for hormone balance and support:
Organic Olivia PCOS Kit- One of my faves to recommend for others struggling with PCOS symptoms
Flow Balance- What I have been using lately to help with hormone regulation postpartum
nourishment- when you look into cycle syncing (or eating and moving according to each phase of your menstrual cycle), you will see that most recommendations are for warming, nourishing foods that are easy to digest to be eaten while menstruating.
rest - I think when our body speaks, we should listen. And when we menstruate, our bodies are telling us a lot. Everything from the timing of our period, regularity, to our symptoms, and even the color of our menstrual blood tell us about our overall health and wellness!
Traditionally, women from all different cultures used this time to rest, rejuvenate, and get ready for the coming month.
stress relief- stress can have a dramatic effect on our cycle. (that is why during some months, stress can make it show up late, or not at all!) Stress relief is always important for holistic health, but mindfully reducing stress before and during your menstrual cycle can help you to mitigate uncomfortable cramps.
Pair TENS therapy with a heating pad - most TENS unit do not recommend being used in conjunction with an electric heating pad. SOME say its okay to use a heating pad of this style. But make sure you check with the manufacturer instructions of your device!
